Teenagers skin care

Skin care is very important for teenagers. Almost 80% of young people suffer from acne or blemishes. That’s the vast majority!

Characteristics of teenaged skin

During adolescence, the dermis changes in response to a group of hormones called androgens. The most well-known of these is testosterone. Its increase stimulates the activity of the sebaceous gland and, consequently, the skin produces more oil or grease, the pores become blocked, and this makes it difficult for the skin to breathe. This results in greasier skin than usual and blemishes which, if not treated properly, can leave a mark or scar.

External factors, such as pollution, and internal factors, such as stress and dietary habits, can negatively affect the skin.

Therefore, the skin must be cared for from the early stages of adolescence using the appropriate products and routines. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist or dermatologist for advice.

Blemishes, Acne

Blemishes are one of the main problems for teenaged skin and are caused by excess oil secretion. From the age of 20, oil secretion decreases, so problems with acne tend to disappear.

Treatments aim to prevent and/or combat all factors contributing to the problem and the different kinds of blemish: blocked hair follicles, blackheads, whiteheads or pimples.

Blocked hair follicles, blackheads and whiteheads (NON-INFLAMMATORY ACNE)

These form when there is an excess of oil and dead skin cells or keratin in the pore, causing blockage. When blocked hair follicles are open, they are called blackheads. Their dark colour is due to the oxidation of the sebum, melanin and/or keratin. When blocked hair follicles are closed, they are called whiteheads.

They should not be touched as they can get infected and cause scarring or other damage. Exfoliation and pore cleansing are highly recommended. Hydroxy acids are great allies in treated these conditions.

Bacteria (in particular P. Acnes) can also cause an infection in blocked pores, which leads to inflammatory acne.

Sometimes redness can be seen on the skin before the pimple appears. This is a sign of possible inflammation.

Mild and moderate acne is treated with products which contain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory active ingredients, such as salicylic acid or retinol.

Facial routine for teenagers skin

Adolescence is the ideal time to establish good skin hygiene habits. At Labelist cosmetics, we recommend a good cleansing, hydration and exfoliation routine.

Osmolyte cleanser is our facial cleanser, enriched with aloe vera and betaine and formulated to remove impurities and excess oil from the skin. It is a basic, everyday product which is ideal for skin cleansing, leaving it supple and toned.

Salicylic serum is a treatment specifically to hydrate and purify the skin and to reduce the production of sebum or oil. Its formula includes niacinamide, salicylic acid and minerals such as magnesium, copper or zinc, which repair and strengthen the skin.

If your pores often get blocked, try Nude Booster three times per week. It gently exfoliates the skin, leaving the pore clear and able to breathe, preventing it from getting blocked.

If your skin needs hydration, use a moisturiser. It doesn’t necessarily need to be oil free; it just has to have a non-comedogenic formula.

  • Avoid oils from wheat, coconut or soy. Shea butter may be used, but it is best not to.
  • Recommended oils include argan and grapeseed oil.

To find out what type of skin you have, you can use our diagnostic test at this link. It only takes 10 minutes, and you will find out exactly which products and ingredients best suit the characteristics of your skin.

Teenaged skin has its own shine which is why it is so coveted, but it must be cared for and treated with the same care as other kinds of skin for it to be healthy and radiant.
